Our Top 3 Tips for Juicing

Juicing is a great way to insure that you receive a maximum amount of nutrients into your body in just one glass a day!  Here are our top 3 tips for juicing:
  1. Your juice should contain a 3 to 1 ratio of vegetables to fruit:  A common mistake people make when juicing is to include too many fruits and this wrecks havoc with blood sugar. Three vegetables to every one 1 fruit is the perfect ratio.
  2. Flash boil green leaves: consuming raw vegetables is fantastic but we run the risk of inviting parasites that are on the surface of leafy greens, or vegetables that cannot be peeled, into our digestive system. I NEVER juice leaves without flash boiling them first; Simply boil water in a pan and drop the leafy greens in for just 10 seconds. This is long enough to kill any bacteria or parasites, and short enough to keep the nutrients intact.
  3. Storage is very important:  Drinking your green juice straight away is obviously best but if you have no time to juice in the morning, its ok to prepare your green juice the night before and store it in an airtight container (such as mason jar) in the fridge. When the juice is exposed to oxygen, the nutrients are destroyed  very quickly through oxidation. Storing your juice in a glass mason jar will ensure that your juice is still full of goodness in the morning.

Here is my morning green juice recipe:
3-4 kale leaves with stems removed (flash boiled)
1 cucumber peeled
1 stick of celery or a little broccoli (flash boiled)
1 apple peeled and cored
Coconut water, which is very low in calories and full of goodness.
Whizz all the ingredients together in a blender, adding water as desired to adjust consistency.

Enjoy!

Have you been over-indulging the last few weeks or do you just generally feel sluggish? Are you looking for a quick and effective way to get back on track? Why don't you try a super-easy one-day juice detox. Many people are put off by juice cleanses because they can't handle the thought of being without food for days...so this is the next best thing, because everyone can give up a day of food without much anxiety. I personally do this quite frequently to give my system a well earned break, and today is one of those days! I made 2 jugs of fresh juice first thing in the morning: the first is a blend of Fresh kale, celery, cucumber and apple. The second is Beetroot, Carrots and a bit of Ginger. I prefer to blend rather than juice my vegetables as I like the fiber to be in there, but both are amazing for you and it just comes down to personal preference. Drink a glass every couple of hours, alternating between the 2...and of course lots of fresh water throughout the day (with a squeeze of lemon). It does wonders for the body, mind and spirit!

The wonders of Juicing

Juicing is a great way to insure that you receive a maximum amount of nutrients in your body. Within 15/20mns of drinking a fresh vegetable juice, the nutrients are in your arteries and veins and the absorption rate of juice is 99%. This is amazing when compared to our digestive system that, at best, absorbs about 40% of the nutrients from the food that we eat. Raw food Guru David Wolfe says that juicing and even blending food allows our body to absorb a lot more nutrients at a much faster rate. Juicing allows us to benefit from the full nutrients available in raw vegetables, which would otherwise be compromised in the cooking process. This allows us to recharge and rejuvenate our body quickly and boost our immune system. Drinking a vegetable juice is a great way to start the day. Try this recipe for Spinach Juice. It's a good one for starters of veggie juicing as it's soft and sweet and tasty:
Ingredients:
1 bunch spinach,
2 apples,
1/2 lemon peeled (optional)
Directions:
Put all ingredients in your juicer, mix well and enjoy.
Experiment with any flavours that you like - you can juice cucumbers, celery, broccoli...add some coconut juice, apples, melon, beetroot, whatever you love!
